***HERES A BIT ABOUT THE WONDERFUL YORKIE***
The breed is only approx 100 years old or so, but its origins are not entirely certain. The Yorkshire Terrier was developed for catching rats that infested the mine shafts and as a hunting dog that could penetrate into badger and fox burrows. At first, the Yorkie was a much bigger animal than the one we see today, but by selectively breeding the smallest individuals, the dog was gradually miniaturized over the years and have been made into a fashion dog. Though a toy breed, the Yorkie is still a terrier in terms of personality. Individual dogs will differ, but they are generally intelligent, independent and courageous. Yorkshire Terriers are quick to determine where they fit in a household's pack. The differences in behavior are largely based on how the owner socializes the Yorkie. Yorkshire Terriers are confident, vigorous and posess a self-important personality. Yorkies typically get along well with other dogs and love to play together with them.
Yorkies tend to exercise themselves within the home, but they also need to have interaction in the form of games. They appreciate a short walk outdoors on leash and enjoy the chance to explore in a safe area. This is not a dog that can live outdoors. The long coat needs brushing or combing every day or two. Families with gentle children and Yorkies should be introduced to other animals from a pup.
